3. Preparing the update

3.1 Installation of Workbench 3.1

If you already have Kickstart ROM(s) 3.1 (V40.68 or V40.70 in the A4000T) and Workbench 3.1 (V40.42) installed, you can continue with chapter 3.3.

Note:

Choose the Workbench menu "Workbench/ Version, Copyright ..." to get information about your current installation. If you have installed an alternative Workbench start a shell and enter the command "Version".

3.2 If you don't have Workbench V40.42 installed

  1. Put your AmigaOS 3.5 Update CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive.
  2. Open the AmigaOS 3.5 symbol and the drawer "OS-Version3.1" with double clicks.
  3. In the window that opens now there is an icon for each supported language of the installation script. Select the one you desire. The installation is nearly completely automatic. You just have to choose which partition you want to install Workbench 3.1 to, which printer drivers and which languages you want to install.
  4. Note:

You do not need to install Workbench 3.1 to the partition you have booted from. You may choose another partition instead. But make sure that you can boot from the partition you chose.

After the installation of Workbench 3.1 you can continue with the pre installation of AmigaOS 3.5 Update.

Note:

You do not have to reboot the computer in order to continue installation.

3.3 The pre installation of AmigaOS 3.5

To install AmigaOS 3.5 the selected partition has to be prepared for installation. After this you have to boot from the prepared partition in order to proceed with the installation.

Note:

If you install to another partition than your usual boot partition please make sure that you have a CD-ROM driver installed on that partition. See chapter 7 for information about how to install the CD-ROM driver. The pre installation is necessary to prepare some things that are needed to install the new icons for example.

Note:

During pre installation you can choose which partition you want to install to. Please make sure that you already installed AmigaOS 3.1 and a CD-ROM driver to that partition and that you can boot from it.

  1. Put your AmigaOS 3.5 Update CD-ROM into your CD-ROM drive if not already done.
  2. Open the AmigaOS 3.5 symbol and the drawer "OS-Version3.5" with double clicks.
  3. In the window that opens now you will see an installation icon.
  4. Double click the icon "OS3.5-Installation".
  5. The installer window opens and shows a selection of installation options. Use the already selected option "OS 3.5 pre-installation" and click on "Proceed". The installation is nearly completely automatic. You just have to choose, which partition the pre installation should take place on.

During the installation your old datatypes and your programs in the "WBStartup"-drawer will be deactivated by moving them into an other drawer. This is for security reasons. Changes made by patch programs could collide with new features of AmigaOS 3.5.

Note:

After the installation you will find a new drawer named "Datatypes-disabled" in "SYS:Classes" and "DEVS:Datatypes". You will find your old datatypes there. You can activate them manually after the update. There will also be a new drawer in the "WBStartup"-drawer where you can find all your WBStartup-programs. These you can manually copy back after a successful update, too.

After the installation you have to reboot your Amiga. Just click on "Proceed" when you see the note about rebooting in the installation program.
